The IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s is Canada’s largest dementia fundraiser, uniting communities nationwide for care and research.
This year, I’m walking for my dad, Al, who is living with dementia, and for my mom, Mairi, and my sister, Heather, who support him with so much love and resilience. Yet, the struggle remains constant. My mom often feels alone in managing his care while carrying the grief and loss that come with it, and my sister bears the heavy responsibility of supporting aging parents, often feeling isolated in those roles.
My family’s story is not an isolated experience. Right now, there are over 770,000 Canadians living with dementia, and with more than 400 new cases diagnosed every day, that number is climbing toward one million. Behind every one of those statistics is a care partner searching for meaningful support, connection, and understanding.
As someone who works with the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories, I see firsthand the difference we make. The Society acts as a crucial lifeline, offering specialized counselling, support groups, and education programs that help families and care partners navigate these challenges. By providing these resources, they ensure that no one—regardless of where they live—has to figure out the path forward alone.
I’m fundraising to ensure care partners don’t have to face this by themselves. Your donation goes directly toward these programs, providing comfort and guidance when things feel overwhelming.
Whether you can give a little or a lot, your kindness helps ensure that people like my dad, and the care partners who love them, have the support they need.
Thank you for your kindness and for being with us.
