Welcome to my Participant Page!
My family and I lost my wonderful dad, Peter Cooper, to Alzheimer’s and Lewy Body dementia in 2023. My dad was an incredible person who brought sparkle to the lives of everyone he met, and the world is poorer without him in it. His illness was devastating both for him and for everyone who loved him. It robbed him of the ability to communicate and wield his signature sense of humour, to perform everyday tasks, and to live independently. In return, it brought him frustration and stole his dignity and wellbeing.
As unique as my dad was, his story is a familiar one; his father, sister, cousin, and other family members had also previously suffered from various dementias, and most of us can think of at least one friend or family member who has been affected. A “landmark” 2024 study from UBC predicted that the number of Canadians living with dementia is expected to balloon 187% from 2020 to 2050.
Prior to and even after developing his own illness, my dad was a health nut who tried everything in his power to preserve his own cognitive and physical health. This, to me, underscores how much we still have to learn about the causes and prevention of dementia, as well as how to support and improve quality of life for those living with the disease and for their caregivers. When my dad’s illness began to progress more quickly than anticipated, my mom and I often found ourselves at an loss in terms of how to locate the care and support he needed.
I’m participating in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Vancouver on May 25th, 2025 to help raise awareness and funds on behalf of the Alzheimer Society, so they can meet the growing demand for programs and services. These and other resources make all the difference in the way that people affected by dementia are able to manage the disease and live life to the fullest.
Thank you for whatever donation you can make. No matter how small or big, you are making a difference in the lives of people affected by dementia. Select the button on the right to donate now. I’d also love for you to join me for the walk in May, if you’re interested!
Thank you again for your generous commitment and support.
