In memory of my mom I walk
My mom was my best friend; I would have done anything for her. I was her fiercest advocate, her voice - even arguing with her Dr that she couldn't have Alzheimer’s as she still functioned, still knew me, the stereotypes I knew of the disease didn’t apply here! Maybe they missed the real cause of her confusion - a new diagnosis could mean a cure, a fix, make this all stop! My denial eventually turned to acceptance, but the road was long and torturous learning to cope, to support, to find strength; the Alzheimer's Society was there for me with a friendly understanding voice, resources and a space to meet other family members all on their own journeys, journeys all unique and different, yet at once all the same.
On May 25th I will walk in memory of my beautiful mamma, who right to the end smiled and laughed every day, showing us all what it means to live life to its fullest with kindness and generosity. This walk raises money on behalf of the Alzheimer's Society so they can meet the growing demand for programs and services. They helped me more than I can say and one day they may help you as well.
