On Sunday, May 31st, I’m participating in the Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon’s fundraiser, a walk for Alzheimer’s. I am walking in honour of my mom, Christine Mowat, who died from advanced dementia last year. I was one of my mom’s caregivers.
Funds raised will help provide in-person and virtual programs, services and education for families facing dementia, providing the support they need to maintain the best possible quality of life throughout the progression of the disease, as well as enabling critical research to change the future of the disease.
The services the Alzheimer’s Society offers are invaluable. I called the helpline whenever we came upon a problem we couldn’t solve on our own. I called when we needed help to stop my mom from driving, when we needed to find home care, when we needed to convince my mom it was time to move into a care home, and when my mom was having hallucinations. When I called I felt the caring on the other end of the line, and the staff listened and offered concrete ideas for us to try each time.
I also attended caregiver support groups and found that attending the groups was incredibly helpful. They helped me to practice self-care, while caring for my mom. Finding a balance was so important.
I believe the work Alzheimer’s Societies do is essential in today's world, where families are often supporting relatives with dementia. I hope some of you will consider donating in support of my walk. Thank you!
