My grandmother Ann Catherine lived with dementia for over a decade. She was the strongest woman I have ever known, and watching the disease slowly take so much from her was one of the hardest things I have ever experienced. She was so strong, in fact, that she was playing competitive tennis right up until her final days. More than anything, she wished for a cure.
Dementia is something we don't talk about enough. Too many people suffer in silence, afraid of losing their sense of self, while their loved ones carry an enormous weight alongside them. The truth is, we are all going to age, and regardless of age, any one of us could be at risk. Dementia is not something to be ashamed of. Let's talk about it.
That's why the Alzheimer Society of Nova Scotia is so vital. Without them, countless Nova Scotian families would have nowhere to turn. They provide the programs, services, and support that help people living with dementia and those who love them navigate the road ahead and live as fully as possible.
