A few years ago, my family started to notice a change in my grandma, it was no longer that she occasionally got the name of a grandkid mixed up or forgot a detail here or there – but a gradual slide into many more challenges. Over the course of the last few years my grandma has changed from someone who lived her whole life on the family farm to being a shell of her former self, supported by an assisted living home. My family is spread over Southern Ontario but we meet every chance we have for family gatherings to share in laughs, cherish the time and capture the memories while we can. I don’t mean for this to be a sob story – I realize that there are many far more painful afflictions in the world – but I would by lying if I said it wasn’t challenging watching the spark dim in someone who was a strong, caring pillar of my childhood.

I’m participating in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Jarvis to help raise money on behalf of the Alzheimer Society, so they can meet the growing demand for programs and services. These and other resources make all the difference in the way that people affected by dementia are able to manage the disease and live life to the fullest.
