My Mom and Dad (Grandma Barb and Grandpa Ken) followed our son's Rep and Select Hockey team, the Ajax Knights, travelling through the Lakeshore loop and the York-Simcoe loop for years. It was a lot of driving but you could always count on Grampa Ken to be there with his helmet celebrating every goal we scored.
Unfortunately, both of them developed dementia a few years apart. As one of their caregivers, I cannot express how much I wish I had been aware of the services offered through the regional offices of the Alzheimer Society. Seeing the depth of support and the wealth of knowledge that is shared here at Alzheimer Society of Durham Region, I cannot express how much that kind of relationship would have enhanced our coping and care and their quality of life.
So we are walking for them, for our generation, for the next generation, and for the generations after that, so no one has to take this journey alone and unsupported.
