I will be participating in the walk for the first time this year in honour of my late Grandpa Lorne Hutter who passed away in November. The latest years of his life had been defined by his battle with vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease, having been diagnosed in 2017 after his family had been noticing symptoms for about a decade. He was a charming and joyful gentleman, an artist and craftsman, a talented musician, a model family man, and many more things. My Grandma has been very thankful for the support provided by the Alzheimer Society and my family has been participating in the Comox, BC walk for several years now to help more families receive similar support; this year I will be doing my part from Ottawa!
If you would like to learn more about my Grandma and Grandpa's story, they were featured in the Spring 2022 connections newsletter as the "Caregiver story": https://alzheimer.ca/bc/sites/bc/files/documents/Connections-Spring-2022_web.pdf .
My grandpa also participated in a pilot program for a new style of care homes to allow dementia patients to lead more fulfilling lives than more traditional homes:
