I’m participating in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in Stratford on May 24 to help raise money on behalf of the Alzheimer Society.

This year I am walking in honour of our wonderful friend Anne B.  Anne did my Mom's hair at her wedding 67 years ago and they have remained friends ever since.  They shared so much....pregnancies and teen years, joys and sorrows, faith...and recipes!....all part of a beautiful group of friends who were always there for each other.  When Anne first moved in to the same building as Mom it seemed that here was another way to share.  First, they and a couple of other old friends would play euchre.  Slowly it was clear that Anne couldn't play anymore so they switched games but that too had to stop eventually.  Now they are limited to short visits.  Mom feels fortunate that the form of Anne's dementia means that she still remembers who Mom is.  She just won't remember that Mom has been there.  There was a day recently when Mom was emotional after a visit and I suggested that she didn't have to go see Anne.  Mom's response was clear....she is my friend and she would visit me, of course I will visit.  Another stage of life for them to share.

Anne is lucky, not in her illness, but in that she has a loving, wonderful family who are there to support her in any way they can.  Someone visits everyday to help and to ensure that she is as well as can be.  Not everyone is as lucky and for those we are grateful for the support the Alzheimer's society offers to all those suffering from the many, many forms of memory loss.  Their programs, supports and resources make all the difference in the way people affected by dementia are able to manage the disease and live life to the fullest.
