Guy Chadsey - Walk for Memories

On May 24th, I will be participating in my tenth Alzheimer Society’s, "Walk for Alzheimer's". This is the principal fund-raiser for our local Alzheimer Society along with Alzheimer Societies across Canada in the work to conquer dementia. I am asking for your support again with my thanks for your previous generosity and friendship.
Over the last nine years, I walked in memory of my late wife, Alison, who died in 2019 from complications of her dementia, and of too many friends and family who have succumbed. Sadly, now I know all too many people who have been consumed by this disease. Most poignantly, not all are elderly. What I find disheartening are those who are being diagnosed in their 50's and early 60's, and whose futures, and those of their families, are being disrupted. The toll on people living with dementia and their caregivers can be vicious.
Recently, glimmers of hope for drugs and measures that might slow the progress of the disease and add precious years to a life fully enjoyed have emerged. But it is not just hope for those who have been diagnosed, it is also hope for family and friends who seek ways in which they can "be there" for their loved ones, ways in which they can cope with unexpected dramatic change, and ways in which we can be a more understanding and compassionate community.
To know that you are not alone means so much to someone with dementia and their caregivers. We all treasure our memories of times spent with family, friends, colleagues and neighbours. That we might lose this capacity to remember is frightening.
The services that your Alzheimer Society provides include programs such as Memory Clinics (to assist in early diagnosis), social recreation, Minds in Motion, counselling, and guidance in navigating the health system. Helping those diagnosed and those who are care givers and loved ones learn about this disease and acquire the information to allow them to make decisions is an ongoing priority.
Our Alzheimer Society is facing a surge in demand for all programs and there is no sign that this need will diminish.
All monies raised will fund our local programs and help us to expand our efforts. Only 46 % of our operating funds come from governmental sources – the rest is from your donations.
Thank you for your past sponsorship of me and your ongoing help as we strive to defeat dementia and provide support and hope.
Donations may be made online using the link below, or I can arrange to pick up a cheque or cash at a time convenient for you.
Thank you for your support,
Guy
