Dear Friends and Family,

I’m excited to share that I’m participating in the IG Wealth Management Walk for Alzheimer’s in support of the Alzheimer Society of Sarnia-Lambton.

This year, I’m walking in Memory of Elly Vergunst.

Who was Elly?

Elly was a truly remarkable person — selfless, humble, kind, and endlessly caring. She played an invaluable role within our organization, serving two terms on our Board of Directors and continuing her service as a dedicated volunteer on both the Fund Development and Event Committees.

Elly’s contributions over the years were immeasurable. She was a committed and passionate volunteer, always willing to lend a hand — whether that meant helping set up and organize fundraising events, selling tickets, or working behind the scenes to bring our campaigns to life through her expertise as a talented graphic designer.

She was one of the first board members to approve funds for our day program — long before any official funding had been secured. Elly believed wholeheartedly in our mission and vision and helped promote them through every event she touched.

Recently, as her friends and family gathered to say goodbye, I was struck by the lasting impact not only that Elly had on the Alzheimer Society, but that the Society had on her life.

Volunteering with us gave Elly a renewed sense of purpose. It brought commitment, joy, and connection. It gave her opportunities to stay active in the community, to give back, and to keep using her creativity to inspire others. Most importantly, Elly found a deep and meaningful support system in the staff and volunteers — many of whom became her closest friends, or as she fondly called them, her “Passy.”

It is both moving and motivating to witness the far-reaching benefits of our programs — not just for individuals living with dementia and their care partners, but for everyone involved in our community.

We proudly stand behind our mission, and we make a lasting impact in people’s lives — but we can’t do it without your help.
