Dear Friends,

This past year has been a difficult one for my family.  My father who had a memory sharper than anyone who I will ever know and who had an amazingly strong heart passed away unexpectedly last May.  Sadly, he did, however, die of a broken heart because it was emotionally difficult to see his beautiful wife slowly fade away and become someone so different because of Alzheimer’s disease.  

My mother, who was always an incredibly energetic, independent, wonderful and caring person, filled with life, was in her element when with family and friends. Now, she is scared and cries all the time because she doesn’t know where she is or who she is and can’t remember how to do the simplest things.  As much as we try to comfort her, it is heartbreaking because we are unable to improve her health; there is so much suffering and there is no cure.   

My mother couldn’t go to my father’s funeral, because she had no idea of who he was or what had happened, or even how to behave. Alzheimer’s has robbed us of a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend.

She can’t communicate well at all but sometimes, my mother will kiss me and that means a great deal. I miss both my parents very much, even though my mother is still with us.
