Welcome to my Participant Page!
This picture was taken a couple of summers ago, out for dinner just before my son was heading off to university. We went to one of my dad’s favourite spots along his favourite strip—St. Clair Avenue West. He ordered dessert, and they served ice cream in a frozen orange. This picture captures my father trying to chip away at the frozen layer with much determination so that he could enjoy his ice cream.
We laughed and laughed.
Moments and memories like these are what remain now that both my parents have dementia. My mother was diagnosed in 2022, and my father started showing signs a couple of years later. Unfortunately, a surgery for another health issue sent my father further into the disease, while my mother lives day to day, very much aware of her mind slipping away.
Alzheimer's and related dementias do not just affect memory; they can affect mood, behaviour, personality, and many other aspects that define a person's fundamental essence.
My career as a social worker, particularly when I worked in frontline healthcare, had me witness firsthand the devastating effects of dementia on patients and families.
Now it is personal.
There are no words to describe how it feels to watch my father, once a master photographer, no longer able to work his camera.
There are no words to describe my mother looking for an anchor to help her feel secure when she can no longer make sense of her experiences.
And there are no words to describe how both parents are descending into their dementias together, yet remain very much separated on their journeys.
I know each and every one of you has reached out to me to show your support for my parents, and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
On May 24, I will be walking in the IG Walk for Alzheimer’s in honour of my parents, hoping to raise money for better programs.
I do not believe there is enough out there to help people living with dementia. I do not believe there is enough recognition of how dementia affects each person differently. Dementia care needs to go beyond "stages" to address the unique needs of each person, including different support groups for individuals and compassionate, care-oriented interventions that are so needed when our brains no longer work as they once did. We need vibrant communities and centers that are engaging, welcoming, and offer programs to meet the diverse needs of those living with dementia.
There are many worthwhile causes out there, and these are difficult economic times for many. Please do not feel you need to donate a specific amount; even the smallest token can make a difference.
I have wanted to do this walk each year since my mom was diagnosed, and each year, my mother said it’s not time. This year, she is saying to go ahead.
